Victorious Dystopia: “Patriot Victory” and its inspiration.

I’ve always been something of a political junkie. Though the finer intricacies and inner-workings of the political system – be it at the national, state, or local level – have never held my interest for long, I do find myself drawn to the ongoing debate(s) writ large in America concerning various individual issues.

This has been the case since my early-to-mid twenties.

It was certainly the case in 2007 when I first began thinking about the state of politics in America and what its ramifications could be regarding our future. I began to wonder how America would look if certain politicians got their way (which is to say, ALL of their way) and drastically shaped the politico-cultural landscape around us.

Hence, the ideation for “Patriot Victory” was born. As any reader of “PV” can attest, it is written largely from an anti-liberal viewpoint, which of course reflects the conservative ideals to which I held quite strongly in my earlier days. My intent, in the early writing stages, and then following its publication, was to illustrate just how harmful a far-left dystopia could prove to be for the United States.

At least that’s partly what drove the plot.

Looking back, I can see also see how my love for this great country of ours – with all of her flawedness and peccadilloes – was (and is) woven throughout the narrative and dialogue.

In short, looking back, this was a quintessential first novel. It is full of naïve idealism, shoddy structure, questionable word choice, a few grammatical and spelling errors, and authorial passion galore. It reflects a time in my life when I held fast to certain ideas – a few of which I’ve abandoned as I’ve grown older and more mature, but “Patriot Victory” will always hold a special place in my heart (and perhaps my literary body of work) as the one that “got it all started” in terms of my seriousness about becoming a writer.

So if you’re looking for a somewhat-decent dystopian story about American in less than fifty years, get a copy of “Patriot Victory”…and enjoy!
